Should My Child Still Learn to Code in the Age of AI?

It's a genuinely reasonable thing to wonder now. For a decade the advice was near-unanimous — coding is the skill, sign your kid up. Then AI arrived that can write a working program from a plain-English sentence, and the ground moved. If a machine can produce the code, is it still worth your child's hours — and your money — to learn how? Parents ask it two ways: some worried they'll waste years on a skill that's about to be automated, some worried they'll fall behind if they don't double down. Both are fair. The honest answer is yes, your child should still learn to code — but the reason has changed, and the reason is the whole point.

Search this and you'll get a wall of confident yeses — almost all of them from companies that sell coding classes. That doesn't make them wrong, but it means the loudest answer comes with a price tag, and it tends to skip the harder part: why, and for what. You'll also find the opposite take — "AI codes now, don't bother" — which is just as lazy in the other direction. The useful answer is underneath both, and it isn't really about coding at all. It's about what you want the coding to build.

What coding was always secretly teaching

Here's the thing the "learn to code for a job" era got slightly wrong, even before AI: the value of coding for a child was never mostly the syntax. It was the thinking underneath it — break a big messy problem into small exact steps, say precisely what you mean, predict what should happen, run it, watch it fail, figure out why, and try again. That loop — decompose, be precise, test, debug — is one of the best mental workouts a child can get. It builds patience, logic, and the deeply useful habit of assuming your first attempt is probably a little wrong and checking it.

AI hasn't touched any of that. What AI automated is the part that was always the least valuable to a child anyway: typing the syntax. Which means the reason to learn coding didn't disappear — it got clarified. The syntax was never the prize. The thinking was.

What AI actually changed: the job moved from typing to judging

A year ago, a person who could code turned an idea into working software. Today, AI turns the idea into plausible-looking software — fast, often good, and sometimes confidently, subtly wrong in a way that looks completely fine until it breaks. So the valuable human skill shifted one step up: from producing the code to directing and checking it. Knowing what you actually want. Reading what the machine gave you. Spotting the bug it's cheerfully hiding. Deciding between two versions that both technically run. You cannot do any of that without understanding how code works — and you can't get that understanding by only ever prompting a chatbot. The kids who will command these tools in ten years are the ones who learned to build things themselves first, so they can tell when the machine is bluffing.

This is the same principle that runs through everything AI touches, coding included: a tool helps when it makes your child think, and hurts when it thinks for them. Learn to code, use AI to go faster — in that order — and it's a superpower. Skip the learning and let AI do the whole thing, and you've raised someone who can't tell working code from a wrong answer wearing a nice suit.

Ask a better question than "will it get them a job?"

The trap in "should my child learn to code?" is that it's usually really asking "is coding a safe career bet?" — and nobody can honestly promise you that about any skill right now. Bet-on-a-job is the wrong frame, and it's the one that makes parents quit the moment a headline says AI writes code now. Try this question instead: do I want my child to be someone who can make a machine do exactly what they mean, and who can tell when it hasn't? That's not a career gamble. That's agency and judgment — and those pay off in medicine, music, running a business, or a job that doesn't exist yet, whether or not your child ever writes a line of professional code.

Whether your child is nine and moving a Scratch cat or seventeen and shipping AI-assisted code, the check is the same, and it's the same one that works for AI and schoolwork generally: can they explain what it's supposed to do, and notice when it doesn't? A child who can has done the thinking. A child who only pasted a prompt and accepted the output hasn't — and no amount of impressive-looking code changes that. Understanding is the thing you're building. The code is just where it shows up.
