AI and Back to School
A new school year is one of the few clean restarts a family gets — new teachers, new binders, a fresh set of habits before anyone's tired. It's also, this year, the moment your child walks back into a building where AI is already part of how work gets done. Surveys in 2026 keep finding the same two things: most kids have already used AI for schoolwork, and most parents don't know what their child's school actually allows. That gap is where the stress comes from — and it's completely fixable in an afternoon.
The good news is that you don't need to become a tech expert or pick a side in the "AI is ruining education / AI is the future" argument. You need a short, calm setup before the homework starts. Here's how to do it — the policy to check, the one rule worth having, and how to tell the difference between AI that helps your child learn and AI that quietly does the learning for them.
Start where the rules actually live: the school
Before you set anything at home, find out what each of your child's teachers expects. AI policies right now are rarely school-wide and almost never simple — one teacher may welcome AI for brainstorming and practice while banning it on graded work; another may forbid it entirely; a third may not have said a word. A child following "the AI rule" as if there's only one is how honest kids end up accused of cheating.
So make it concrete at the start of the year: check the syllabus or class page, and if it's unclear, send the teacher a one-line email — "Is AI okay for homework in your class, and if so, for what?" Teachers appreciate the parent who asks. Then help your child treat "what's allowed" as class-by-class information they're responsible for knowing, the same way they know which class needs a calculator and which doesn't.
The one house rule worth having: try it first
If you set only one rule this year, make it this: attempt it yourself before you ask AI. The child reads the problem, writes a first sentence, sketches a first solution — and only then brings AI in, as something to check against, learn from, or push past. It's a small piece of friction, and it protects the exact thing a school year is for: the effort of thinking, not just the arrival of an answer.
This one rule quietly settles most of the hard cases. Using AI to explain a concept you got stuck on, after you tried? Great. Asking it to produce the finished paragraph you'll hand in without having thought it through? That's the line. "Try it first" isn't a restriction the child resents — it's a habit that keeps the tool in the passenger seat where it belongs.
The test that tells help from outsourcing
You won't be watching every homework session, and you don't need to. There's a simpler check, and your child can learn to run it on themselves: can you explain what you just turned in, and why it's right?
If your child can walk you through the steps, defend the argument, re-solve one problem without the app open — the AI helped, and the learning is theirs. If they can't, the use was too passive, no matter how good the output looked. Frame it warmly, not as a trap: "Show me how you'd explain this to me." Kids who know the explain-it-back test is coming naturally use AI more actively — asking it why, not just what — which is the whole game.
Set the tools up together, once, before week one
Take twenty minutes before the first assignment lands and sit down together with whatever tool your child will use. Turn on the account settings that fit their age, look at what the tool saves and what it doesn't, and — most usefully — run one real question through it side by side. Ask it something you both know the answer to and watch it be confidently wrong, or watch it agree with a bad idea. Nothing teaches "this is a clever guesser, not an oracle" faster than seeing it slip while you're both looking.
Doing this together, on your device or with you present, is the quiet backbone of the whole approach: no child accounts running unsupervised, no data about your child collected, and a default of AI-as-a-shared-activity rather than a private one. It also means the first time the tool says something odd, you're already in the conversation.
Age by age
Same principles — know the policy, try it first, explain it back — delivered differently as they grow.
- Ages 7–10 — keep it together and light. At this age AI belongs alongside you, not in their hands for homework. If a method needs refreshing, use AI privately to remind yourself, then teach your child directly. The goal is human, hands-on learning; the lesson about AI is simply that it's a computer that guesses, and grown-ups check it.
- Ages 11–13 — make "try it first" the household default. This is where independent homework and AI curiosity meet. Set the rule out loud, keep use visible and occasional, and use the explain-it-back check regularly. The message: the point isn't to finish faster, it's to understand the step.
- Ages 14–17 — hand them the judgment, check in rather than hover. Teens can run the whole workflow themselves — attempt first, read the explanation, re-solve unaided, check the class's rule before using it on graded work. Your job shifts to occasional real conversations about where it helped and where it did the thinking for them, and to keeping the door open when a teacher's policy is unclear.
Five moves before the first day
- Find each class's AI rule. Syllabus, class page, or a one-line email to the teacher. Write them down where your child can see them.
- Agree on the one house rule. "Try it first, then AI." Say it once, plainly, and let it do the heavy lifting all year.
- Do the twenty-minute tool setup. Age-appropriate settings, a look at what it saves, and one question run together so they watch it get something wrong.
- Name the explain-it-back test. Tell them it's coming — not as a gotcha, but as the way you'll both know the learning stuck.
- Keep one door open. "If a teacher's rule is confusing, or the AI says something weird, come tell me." A child who isn't afraid of the conversation is a child who stays honest.
The calm bottom line
Your child is going to meet AI this school year whether or not you've decided how. The families who do well with it aren't the ones who lock it out or wave it through — they're the ones who spent one calm hour before the term started deciding how it fits: what the school allows, what the house rule is, and how everyone will know the difference between help and hand-off. Do that, and AI becomes just another tool your child uses with judgment, like a calculator or a search engine before it.
