How to Tell If Your Child Is Using AI for Homework
You read the essay twice. It's good — a little too good, a little too smooth, and it doesn't quite sound like your child. A quiet worry sets in: did they actually write this? If that's why you're here, take a breath first. The worry is reasonable, and you're not being paranoid. But the question you're asking — "how do I catch them?" — is going to lead you somewhere unhelpful. There's a better question underneath it, and it's the one this guide is really about.
The internet's answer to your worry is a long list of "5 ways to spot AI instantly" and a link to an AI-detector tool. We're going to be honest about why that whole approach backfires, and then give you something that actually works — a calm way to know whether the learning is your child's, which matters far more than whether a chatbot touched the page.
First, the hard truth: you can't reliably "detect" it
It's tempting to believe there's a tell — a phrase, a rhythm, a tool — that gives a clean yes or no. There isn't, and betting on one will hurt you two ways.
- AI detectors are not proof. They guess, and they guess wrong in both directions — clearing work that was AI-written and, worse, flagging work a child wrote entirely themselves. A false accusation against a kid who did their own work does real damage to trust that's hard to win back. Treat any detector score as a rumor, never a verdict.
- The "obvious signs" aren't reliable either. Polished grammar might mean a chatbot — or a strong writer, a helpful teacher, a tutor, or a spell-checker. Studies have found that adults, including trained teachers, spot AI-written text at rates barely better than a coin flip. A hunch is a fine reason to get curious. It is not evidence.
So if certainty is off the table, what do you do with the worry? You change the goal.
The better goal: is the thinking theirs?
Here's the reframe that makes this manageable. Whether AI was involved isn't actually the thing you care about — plenty of good learning now involves AI, and plenty of bad learning always did (copying a friend, patching together search results without understanding any of it). What you care about is whether your child did the thinking. And that you can check, with no software and no detective work.
The test is one question: can they teach it back to you? Sit down, be genuinely warm about it, and say: "This is good — walk me through how you got here." Then listen.
- A child who did the thinking can explain the argument, tell you which part was hard, say why they picked this example over that one, and defend a point when you gently push back. The knowledge is in there.
- A child who outsourced the thinking — to AI, to a website, to anyone — can't. The words are on the page but not in their head. They stall, they can't rephrase it, they can't say why.
Notice what this test does: it stops caring whether the tool was ChatGPT or Google or a clever older cousin, and starts caring about the only thing that lasts — whether your child can think about the subject. That's the question worth your energy.
Signs worth noticing — as conversation-openers, not accusations
A few things reasonably make a parent curious. Hold them loosely, as reasons to ask, never as a case for the prosecution:
- Work that's suddenly far more polished than usual, with no rough drafts or notes behind it.
- Vocabulary or a tone that doesn't sound like your child — and that they can't quite explain when asked.
- A finished assignment that appeared very fast, with no visible middle — no false starts, no crossing-out, no "this part was annoying."
- An essay that's confident and fluent but oddly generic, or that doesn't quite answer the question that was set.
Any of these might mean AI. They might also mean your child had a good day, got help you knew nothing about, or finally clicked with the topic. That's exactly why the move is to ask, not to announce a conclusion.
What to do — without turning it into a gotcha
How you handle a suspicion matters more than the suspicion itself, because the wrong handling teaches your child to hide, and a child who hides is one you can no longer help. Aim for the opposite.
- Lead with curiosity, not a verdict. "Tell me about this" opens a door; "Did you cheat?" slams it. You want the honest version of what happened, and you only get that if it's safe to tell you.
- Separate the tool from the trust. Make it clear the problem, if there is one, isn't that they touched AI — it's whether they skipped the learning. That distinction keeps the conversation about growth instead of guilt.
- Fix it forward. If it turns out AI did the thinking, don't just confiscate — redo one piece together the honest way, so they feel the difference between having an answer and understanding one.
- Agree on the line for next time. Most kids genuinely don't know where "help" ends and "outsourcing" begins, because nobody drew the line. Draw it together: brainstorming and checking, fine; having it write the thing you were supposed to write, not. Writing it down turns a one-off fight into a standing rule.
- Loop in the teacher as a partner. If it touches graded work, a calm "here's what I noticed, how do you want to handle AI this year?" makes the teacher an ally — and reminds you the rules are theirs to set, class by class.
Age by age
The teach-it-back test works at every age; what changes is how heavy-handed you need to be around it.
- Ages 7–10 — mostly not a homework issue yet. At this age AI shouldn't be doing schoolwork at all; it belongs to shared curiosity beside you, not solo assignments. If work looks suspiciously adult, the fix is simple and warm: sit together and do it the real way. You're setting the norm early — the work is yours to think through — long before the stakes rise.
- Ages 11–13 — the line gets drawn here. This is where independent homework and easy AI collide, and where most kids first blur help into outsourcing without meaning to. Keep use visible, use the teach-it-back question routinely (not just when you're suspicious), and make the household rule explicit: try it yourself first, use AI to check or explain, never to produce. You're coaching a habit, not running a courtroom.
- Ages 14–17 — trust plus transparency. Teens will use AI, and hunting for it will only teach them to cover their tracks. Aim instead for a teen who'll tell you how they used it because it's not a trap to admit. Talk openly about where AI genuinely helped their thinking and where it quietly replaced it, and let them own the consequences at school. The goal isn't a kid who never touches AI — it's one who can tell the difference between a tool and a ghostwriter, and chooses well when you're not looking.
The calm bottom line
You will probably never have certainty about whether a chatbot touched a given assignment, and chasing that certainty — with detectors, with searches for "the signs," with confrontations — tends to cost you the very thing that actually keeps a child honest: a relationship where they don't have to hide. So aim lower and truer. Don't try to catch the tool. Check the learning, with one warm question and a real conversation. A child who can teach you what they did has done the work, whatever helped along the way. A child who can't hasn't — and now you know exactly what to sit down and rebuild together.
